E4 is a TV channel branched off channel 4 in 2001. The “E” stands for entertainment meaning the focus age group is 15-35 (youth). It broadcast shows like The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother. It shows a lot of comedies, sit coms, reality TV and drama aimed at youth. They show both US and UK programmes like Made in Chelsea and Misfits. In September 2012 E4 attracted more people in its history. It is watched by 9 million people a month more than BBC3 and Sky 1.

BBC 3 is another TV channel made by the BBC. Again, it is for 15-35 year olds. BBC normally broadcast UK TV, such as Russell Howards Good News and Eastenders repat. The type of genre of BBC3 varies as there is sport, drama, urban drama, comedy and more. This means it attracted most youth in the spectrum for one way or another. BBC thought that they needed another Channel to be a bit more “urban” and that’s where BBC3 came in. It was broadcasted in February 2003.

My target audience is 15- 30 year olds but I expect a majority viewing from 15-21 year olds. It would be broadcasted on a Thursday due to Champions League being on Tuesday and Wednesday. The groups I have targeted are C1, C2, and E. the physcographic group I am going to target are the strugglers, reformers and explorers. This is because the show is new and urban. It is pre-watershed, even though it has moderate violence and drug references and no use. I hope I can get a lot of the top boy and youngers viewers as they are quite alike although this show will be quite sophisticated.

During our focus group, we spoke about our narrative idea, which was a “sophisticated top boy” aimed at 15-21 year old boys and a few girls. The topics would be about money, violence and the opposite sex.

We based our programme on the streets of London town, and the things that happen in youth society in London. The drugs, the clothes, the girls, the fights, the love and the hate.  Although we do not have the names of the characters, we have the personalities they portray. One of them is a street smart sophisticated guy who is not into violence but is about his money the other one is a funny character to show a bit of light heartedness in the pre- watershed show.  Humera asked “how is the smart character “smart”?” This made me realise that out characters need to have an identity that allows the audience to understand who he is and what he stands for.

The location would be set in Ladbroke Grove area just to show a darker representation of London.

Ill Manors Review

“Ill Manors” was directed by Ben Drew or Plan B to most of us. He is a rapper singer known by the track “She Said” he also played a part in Adulthood, Harry Brown, 4.3.2.1 and The Sweeny. Although he directed Ill Manors, he also played the role of the cab driver, which took the main character away from the hood which was a smart move on his part. Also Plan B was also rapping throughout the story line which made it seem like his own movie. For a low budget film the directing was top notch, which made us now look at Ben Drew as a serious director.

Riz Ahmed plays Aaron, a teen who has grown up in a care home, throughout the film it looked like he didn’t have his own mind until he found the baby on the train aborted by Kata, played by Natile Press, an eastern European who is forced to be a sex object and tries to run away from that life. Ed Skrein plays Ed another youth that comes out of a care home. He doesn’t use his brain a lot and is very rushed into making decisions. To be fair, they are all pretty decent actors, but not at the quality of Asher D and Kano and far Idris Alba.

The characters were in abundance and did their job, because Marcel’s gang looked like a proper gang that a lot of people on the road would think it was a real gang. Also the extras like the ones at the pub made the movie look more realistic and something that could happen in real life.

The plot is about 4 drug dealers who all get involved in their respective problems, but different dealers deal with it differently. There are also fiend’s who need their quick fix of crack and will go to any lengths to get it, whether it is killing, stealing or selling their bodies to men. Also, joining gangs to look good, until it all goes up in flames, literally. The plot is mainly what money drugs and power can do to people in a nut shell. The streets of London are also a major part in this film as it is based in London, Ghetto London.

The genre of the film is a British urban drama based in London, so I thought it could maybe be about something like Adulthood, Top Boy, and Bullet Boy etc. I was expecting fighting, war, drugs and money. I think I was right because Ill Manors was just like the other films made by Noel Clarke. The mood was an eerie mood because it always seemed dark. The slow rapping kind of like poetry made the tension increase throughout the movie.

The sound track was mostly Plan B rapping about the story and lives of the characters, this worked well due to crazy lives of every single one of the main characters, also there were no mainstream songs on the movie to show it is not a movie for the light hearted. The music was non diegetic for most of the movie if not all of it, but the music was parallel as it was dark music just like the movie. The music was also quite a bit of “gangsta” music due to the contents of the movie and the things the characters were embarking on. I was expecting this type of music because most of the British urban dramas have that type of sound track. Like Adulthood, Ill Manors have a sound track available to download and listen to.

The audience is for youth from about 15- 35 even though the age rating was an 18. It is about the life that a lot of youth find interesting so they would watch it also it is targeted at C1-E psychographs as that is low middle and working class people.

I would recommend it for people who understand how it is to be in the predicament of some of the people there or people who are interested about that life.  It could also be used as a deterrent for people who want to be in that life because they think it is cool.

University students looked to see if playing violent video games affects behaviour and actions. The daily mail tells us even for 20 minutes, it can do so. This is relevant to the hypodermic model as it show people are being indoctrinated by the games they play, even if it just for 20 minutes a day.

Two step flow model

This article on Jamal Edwards shows us how he has become a great success and a multi-millionaire from living in the hood and not having very much. He is 23 and is worth £8m by creating SBTV and is a film maker. This article shows us that Jamal Edwards has been influenced by top people such as Richard Branson.

Uses and gratification  

Gratification Theory, made by Katz and Blumer argues that people actively choose their media products based on their needs. Since people make these active choices, the media has less power to influence than previously thought. There are special categories of need gratification Diversion - Escape from routine and problems; emotional release; Personal Relationships - Social utility of information in conversation; substitution of media for companionship Personal Identity - Value reinforcement or reassurance; self-understanding, reality exploration; and Surveillance - Information about factors which might affect one, or will help one do or accomplish something.

This allows men to get information about football so it could be in the category of surveillance, however it is also diversion as some men look at the gossip.

For our preliminary task, we had to film and edit a person opening a door, walking across the room and conversing with another person. It also needed to contain match on action, a shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.

We stuck to the brief, and our shots and the 180 degree rule were delivered well. Vijay filmed Mariam and I very well and stuck to the 180 degree rule whilst others failed. We used the story board to help us know what shots and what how we wanted preform the shots, it also added a fluency to are filming causing us to do the majority if our filming in a double lesson, whether that was right or wrong, it was done.

EBI:-

Our transition lacked fluency and any real emphasis, as the transition made it look like it was a very long conversation that lasted hours or even days! Also, our planning was good, but we didn't utilise it to the best of ability causing a lot of spontaneous actions and moves. Looking back on our film in class showed me that some of the shots were out of focus which made our film look quite amateur. The camera movement also portrayed that. Also next time in my pre-production task we need to delegate role as there was a little bit of confusion in who needed to do what and when they needed to do it.

Our film starts off with me walking towards the door and a close up of my shoes there was then match on action which was an extreme close up of my hand on the door opening it. I then was filmed walking towards Mariam with the camera behind me, which made it an over the shoulder shot. There was then an over the shoulder shot from Mariam's shoulder looking at me, this automatically showed the audience that we knew each other and we may be conversing. We hen started conversing and with the 180 degree rule, on paper, everything should have went to plan, but practically, it didn't because of the transitions in our conversation.

Once the conversation was terminated, Mariam was then filmed leaving the room and moving further and further away from the camera which implied that the scene had ended. The editing was quite long as we were cutting a lot of unnecessary shots and scene.

I believe the audience targeted for this production was youth, hence the setting being in a school also the surrounding noise conveyed that.

Overall, I believe our production was good, but it just needed a little more thought going into the filming and editing and a bit more organisation but on the whole it was a good experience and filming and editing was a joy to do and will help me in many more task to come. Also the feedback I got will cause me to take heed on it and try to improve on further task.
