Theories
Hypodermic Needle Model
University students looked to see if playing violent video
games affects behaviour and actions. The daily mail tells us even for 20
minutes, it can do so. This is relevant to the hypodermic model as it show
people are being indoctrinated by the games they play, even if it just for 20
minutes a day.
Two step flow model
This article on Jamal Edwards shows us how he has become a
great success and a multi-millionaire from living in the hood and not having
very much. He is 23 and is worth £8m by creating SBTV and is a film maker. This
article shows us that Jamal Edwards has been influenced by top people such as
Richard Branson.
Uses and gratification
Gratification
Theory, made by Katz and Blumer argues that people actively
choose their media products based on their needs. Since people make these
active choices, the media has less power to influence than previously thought.
There are special categories of need gratification Diversion
- Escape from routine and problems; emotional release;
Personal Relationships - Social utility of information in conversation;
substitution of media for companionship Personal
Identity - Value reinforcement or reassurance; self-understanding,
reality exploration; and Surveillance -
Information about factors which might affect one, or will help one do or
accomplish something.
Four Four Two
This allows men to get information about football
so it could be in the category of surveillance, however it is also diversion as
some men look at the gossip.
I use the media to :
Be informed about things going on in the world
To be entertained
To be enticed

Preliminary exercise task
Evaluation task
For
our preliminary task, we had to film and edit a person opening a
door, walking across the room and conversing with another person. It
also needed to contain match on action, a shot reverse shot and the
180 degree rule.
Our task feedback
WWW:-
We
stuck to the brief, and our shots and the 180 degree rule were
delivered well. Vijay filmed Mariam and I very well and stuck to the
180 degree rule whilst others failed. We used the story board to help
us know what shots and what how we wanted preform the shots, it also
added a fluency to are filming causing us to do the majority if our
filming in a double lesson, whether that was right or wrong, it was
done.
EBI:-
Our
transition lacked fluency and any real emphasis, as the transition
made it look like it was a very long conversation that lasted hours
or even days! Also, our planning was good, but we didn't utilise it
to the best of ability causing a lot of spontaneous actions and
moves. Looking back on our film in class showed me that some of the
shots were out of focus which made our film look quite amateur. The
camera movement also portrayed that. Also next time in my pre-production task we need to delegate role as there was a little bit of
confusion in who needed to do what and when they needed to do it.
Our
film starts off with me walking towards the door and a close up of my
shoes there was then match on action which was an extreme close up of
my hand on the door opening it. I then was filmed walking towards
Mariam with the camera behind me, which made it an over the shoulder
shot. There was then an over the shoulder shot from Mariam's shoulder
looking at me, this automatically showed the audience that we knew
each other and we may be conversing. We hen started conversing and
with the 180 degree rule, on paper, everything should have went to
plan, but practically, it didn't because of the transitions in our
conversation.
Once
the conversation was terminated, Mariam was then filmed leaving the
room and moving further and further away from the camera which
implied that the scene had ended. The editing was quite long as we
were cutting a lot of unnecessary shots and scene.
I
believe the audience targeted for this production was youth, hence
the setting being in a school also the surrounding noise conveyed
that.
Overall,
I believe our production was good, but it just needed a little more
thought going into the filming and editing and a bit more
organisation but on the whole it was a good experience and filming
and editing was a joy to do and will help me in many more task to
come. Also the feedback I got will cause me to take heed on it and
try to improve on further task.

Brands.
Nike:-
The Nike brand crosses two of Dyer's groups. Self importance and pride and elite people. As Nike is a sports brand, they include some of the best sports stars in world, such as Ronaldo, Serena Williams and LeBron James and by having people like those wear products like that automatically give us as consumers self pride when we buy those products. Its brand values would be hard work, dedication and determination.
The Nike brand is about working hard and determination.
Elite
Rolex:-
Rolex is in a few of Dyer's groups. Rich lifestyles, Dreams, Successful careers and Elite people. Rolex specialize in high class watches for the upper classes which show that Rolex is about living well and looking good. Rich famous stars where Rolex making it an expensive brand. Its brand values are rich lifestyles because consumers and employees portray that lifestyle. The brand is quite renowned for its passion and love for making watches in the best way possible.
Rolex is about looking good and dressing well
Sophisticated
Ciroc
Ciroc is again a big brand which makes is well known and appealing to different audiences meaning it is in more than one of Dyers' groups for example, it is in rich lifestyles and successful careers and elite people. As Ciroc is large brand it has people who promote the alcohol like Diddy and Rick Ross. Although its is in the category of “rich lifestyle,” Diddy does say “I cannot imagine a Spirit more suitable for commemorating life with family and friends than CÎROC.” This shows that the brand values are wealth and togetherness.
Ciroc is about having a good time whilst looking rich
Celebrity
Volkswagen:-
This is a brand for the working and middle class. The people in the adverts emphasize that. They are usually men with a family which brings me onto Dyer's theory. I think it belongs to the happy families and pride categories. I think pride is a theory this brand takes because the people in the advert are happy with their purchase. I also think that the brand values are contentment and happiness..
Volkswagen is middle class contentment
Happy
Persil:-
Persil is a washing brand that targets mothers and people that do the washing up. The brand values are nature childhood and happy families, I think this because in all the adverts, the kids are playing outside interacting with nature and once the clothes come out of the washing machine its all smiles.
The brand values could be pride in the way you look and no regrets because you can just wash off the stains.
Persil is family friendly and is for mothers with children

750 word essay
The video that I chose to talk about is called "Forever" by Drake Kayne West Lil Wayne and Eminem. I chose to talk about it because it has a lot of cuts in it due to two stories in one music video. Its a video on the rise to fame which is good to talk about as it shows from childhood to adult life.
To start off with in the first 15 seconds there is about 5 straight cuts show LeBron James playing poker and his facial expression. The cuts are good because the viewer sees what he is doing straight away, playing poker, which tells them this music video has something to do with him. After that, there is a fade out this shows the screen fading to black which tells us that there is a change in time, place and character. After the fade out, we see about 10 cuts in 13 seconds, a mixture of straight cut and a dissolve. There are a few straight cuts which just get us familiar with he is (in a club) hence the lights and tall frame, but there are more dissolves when the other characters are being introduced such as Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem. I think the dissolve is used to tell us that they are all n the same place, doing the same thing, also, when the characters are being introduced, they are being introduced in a medium shot. Then when Drake starts to rap, there are two pictures of him, a close up and a medium shot to emphasise what his face looks like when he is rapping, but also his hand signals on the medium shot. It takes exactly one minute to see our first shot in the other story line of Lebron James and it is a jump cut because we do not expect it. After a second on the James story line, we cut back on to Drake rapping, but only for 2 seconds as we cut back on to James'. Now in just around 15 seconds there are 6 cuts changing from James to Drake and back again. The medium shot of LeBron James is again introducing him as a young boy playing basketball. After that there is about 15 seconds of Drake by himself until the chorus which is 20 seconds long and you see a close up of LeBron James and a close up of his coach which shows that his coach was a beneficial person in his life and he respects him.
In the first 10 seconds of Kayne's verse, the are three straight cuts of him, which implies that this minute is all his, but is soon contradicted as you see a jump cut to LeBron James Dunking which is a long shot but then you see a medium shot of him, a few team mates and his coach which again shows that without them he wouldn't be the player he is today. For 6 seconds there are a lot of cuts from LeBron to Kayne. Then for about 30 seconds it Just all Kayne. Even though its all him there are still a lot of cuts, from a medium shot to a long shot and visa versa. Then in the chorus, it starts with a close up of all the players in Lebron's team's shoes which show the hard work and team work they have, it then goes to Drake singing and then back and fourth between LeBron James and Drake, both of the cuts are predominately jump cuts with close ups and medium shots of both LeBron and Drake.
In Lil Wayne's verse there is about 12 seconds of straight cuts of Lil Wayne all of them are close ups this makes us get to know him better because before we only saw him in a medium shot. Then for 14 seconds there is jump cuts from Lil Wanyne to LeBron with Lil Wayne still being shot closely. Then just like the start, for 25 seconds you see a close up of Lil Wayne with straight cuts, the only time you do not see Lil Wayne in those 25 seconds is when you see the close up of the girls he is with, this show us that he is the man and all the girls like him. Then as usual in the chorus, we see both LeBron and Drake in simultaneous jump cuts.
Then in Eminem's verse we see a few close ups of him and his team before he starts to rap to show us what he is dealing with. Then when he starts to rap there are a lot of straight cuts of him close up and there is no sign of Lebron's story for 30 seconds then you get a glimpse of him for about a second and then it is back to Eminem for the rest of his verse.

Media Presentation
Mr Halsey's feedback
What went well
Music and parallel images fit perfectly
Contrapuntal worked well with lyrics but not sound
Clear thought and justification for choice
Even better if
Switch to contrapuntal needs to be more shocking
Last parallel slide was ambiguous
Think about the music not the lyrics
My feedback
I think that the music fitted with the pictures but was interpreted wrong as I said the song was from Jay Z and Kanye West. The song Otis was a song by Otis Redding and only covered by Jay Z and Kanye, therefore, I think the pictures were right but perceived wrong.
Jay Z and Kayne West Otis

Iphone 5c
The media language used to present the iphone 5c was langue
suitable for everyone to understand, there is no media jargon or any real phone
jargon, this enables everyone to understand the key concepts of the phone and
how it works.
The genre of the presentation is persuasive and an advert,
also the representation of the advert is a positive representation, as Apple
are trying to sell something.
Apple have also used semiotics to try and sell the iphone 5c
as they have used the myth that apple phones look the best and work the best. This
inclines people that are watching it to believe it which inturn will lead to
more sales.
The audience the iphone 5c is targeted to is people who like
colour, such as the Chinese.
By having an American man and an English man talking in the
advert show the diverse nature of apple and the iphone, this inclines British
people to buy the product as much as Americans and Chinese.
The purpose of the advert was to persuade people to by the
iphone, this is shown in the persuasive language the use throughout the advert.
The mise-en-scene in the advert also helped sell the iphone
as the blank white screen shows that nothing else is import apart from the
phone.
Trailer Analysis
For my trailer analysis I analysed "Why did I get married too," which is a romantic comedy about group of friends and their wives. going on a holiday. As usual there is conflict between all of the respective men and women, due to secrets coming out which overshadows the time they had. The two main couples get divorced which splits up the whole group, all the families resolve the issues except for the divorced two, and the man gets killed in a car crash.

Film Noir
Film Noir is a type of genre from the Hollywood scene
which normally involves crime, detectives and sexual activities. It originates
from German cinema and came to America in the time of the great depression (1929).
“Film Noir” is French for “Black film.” It first came to Hollywood via a French
critic called Nino Frank. But the name film noir was not really established so
the early film noir was called “melodramas.”
There are a lot of plots in the film noir genre, such as
plain clothed policeman or even an aging boxer. Film noir was originally associated with American productions;
films now have been made around the world.
In this image there is back lighting as you can only see a
silhouette, this adds to the mystery of the image as you do not see any faces.
Also the low key lighting produces a contrast between the light at the front
and their outline. This means only a key light and back light are used as there
is a dramatic contrast.

Hillsborough and Hall's theory
The dominant meaning of this article is that hillsborough was the polices fault, this is shown in the tittle "the real truth" also the bullet point that says "cop smeared Liverpool fans to deflect the blame" this shows that the police put the blame on the Liverpool fans when it was actually their fault.
The negotiated meaning is that police could have helped the Liverpool fans that died, but the Liverpool fans could have helped themselves by not getting into that situation in the first place as it has resulted in the death of 96 people.
The oppositional meaning is that it was the fans fault for the death of those 96 people and the police were just trying to do their job, the fans should have behaved in an adult enough manner and not bundled.
Halls theory of encoding and decoding
In essence, halls theory is a theory that looks at the way the media portray different things and how we, the consumers interpret it.He says that TV and other mediums audiences are presented with messages that are decoded, or interpreted in different ways depending on where a person is from, how rich they are, and their personal experiences.

The joker
Also his facial expression highlights his evilness as he is not smiling but the lipstick on his face makes it look like he is. The picture is quite a dark picture but there is a glimmer of light surrounding the joker. The setting is quite a dark setting highlighting the type of person the joker is.
All in for D ROSE
The colour of the setting is quite dull, maybe to show that hard work isn't pretty
The picture of Derrick Rose is a picture of him pushing himself to the limit is not directly in the middle of the page as the words "all in for d rose" has as much meaning as the picture.
The size of the text is quite big because it needs to be noticed as there is no Adidas sign or logo, also the writing is in red symbolizing passion, and Derrick Rose himself accentuates that by the type of person he is.
This shot is a close shot which adds affect as you can see the pain his is enduring and as a result of it being a close up, you can see the sweat which also adds to the passion of d rose. The photo was taken indoors which makes basketball fans think he is training in the gym and working hard. Also his eyes are closed so it looks like he isn't looking at the camera, this shows that he is in full flow and doesn't care about anything apart from winning.

Why I chose AS Media
I believe AS media is the right choice for me, simply because of what I am looking to do in the future. I want to go into uni and study something to do with sport science; whether that is sports science and coaching, business or media. The media industry is an industry that generates money whatever predicament the world is in. And no, I am not saying its all about money, but there is always a financial aspect to a job and media is no different. Looking at Sky Sports and BBC Sport showed me that media in sport is a job that looks enjoyable and comes with lots of perks. For me, being one of the first to tell the world something seems unimaginable because you are the person that carries joy or despair in one news story. I hope one day I can actually be the first one to tell you, a certain player has moved to a certain club for a world record fee of £250m or be the first person to tell you, the first black prime minister has been appointed at number 10 Downing Street. For me that would be a dream come true.
What I want to learn from Media, is how to not not fall for the stereotypical stories and the propaganda shown in different media. I also want to learn how to scrutinize a film or a piece of media to see whether I could do a better job.
