Essay

I believe it is different in certain aspects of the other two media platforms. Within broadcast there are trailers and these trailers are more to apprise audiences of what the film is going to be about and stuff such as when the film is going to be relinquished this is all information for the audiences. Convivial networking has a different purport to this as it is utilized mainly for interaction with fans. Additionally gregarious networking is different to print and more particular magazine interviews as this contains information on maybe the film or Plan B himself and his life. This on the other hand is kindred to broadcast as they both give out information to the viewers. However all three are different as they may target different audiences, as Twitter may mainly fixate on the younger audiences the trailer maybe scarcely older age group and magazine articles may be for those who are going to work. Relating this to physocographics as the Twitter audience may be aspirers who are aspiring to become likePlan B, Trailers would be for the mainstream as trailers are visually examined by most people as the want to get information about the trailer. I think reformers are targeted because they are different to you “mondeo” man.The demographics may not be that different for each of the groups, as they would all mainly be D. C1. C2 and maybe even the B category

Frozen planet LR

I believe the audience for Frozen Planet are B-D. As the programmes purpose is to educate, entertain and inform, due to the bbc motto. Because it is on at prime time, people in the E category will be watching reality tv or a soap opera. I believe it targets families as it is a very family oriented documentary, suitable for all ages however the time would suggest that it is not for children. The physcographics using Young and Rubicam's theory would target mainstremers and reformers. Mainstreamers as the show are on at a peak time. This specific category of people tends to follow the typical way and do not like media products too much out of their comfort zone. Frozen Planet does educate, inform and entertain its audience. Moving on to uses and gratifications, Blumler and Katz (1974) I believe this documentary would fit into both a personal relationships and surveillance category. Personal relationships because as the show is quite family orientated, it can be used for social interaction of family life. Also, surveillance because Frozen Planet represents weather reports from the Antarctic.

ILL manors FB Insta ect

Ill manors Facebook page
1.     Ill manors have 23639 likes on their Facebook page.
2.     The top of the page promotes the DVD and download of the movie as it is now on DVD

This one appeals to the target audience if mainstream youth who are into pop and British music due to the picture being of the Brits awards.

This picture show the target audience are people who are actors or want to be actors as they are persuading people to join.

This post is for the people who enjoyed ill manors as there is another film out with the same genre and they are promoting it, maybe for a small fee.

This post is a picture of a clip from the ill manors movie which might entice movie watchers that follow the facebook page.

This post promotes the ill manors DVD by allowing people to choose their own case for it; this is a way to get money off the target audience which is youth.

The music video is a type of synergy as it promotes the ill manors video as well as the song the music video will promote the film as it has the same name.

Ill manors twitter feed

Ill manors used interaction with the audience and retweets by celebrities they would do this by the use of hashtags and tweets.

#illmanors #megamondays #qawards  #legaldownloads  #mustbuy

They use pictures to make the feed look more eye opening and to make twitter, which is quite word based, into pictures.

The tag promoted the film and target audience as the film would relate to the what they are such as graffiti and these younger audiences would be targeted and this is a way of targeting them in a way in which is something they do and something that interests them.

They promoted the film in the cinemas and DVD by again using retweets of fans and also the cast of the movie so that people could see the cast of the movie and if they wanted to follow them they could as well.

Ill manors instagram
Ill manors has been promoted on plan personal instagram and is done by pictures of the upcoming movie.

There are no hashtags really due to this being instagram and not twitter.

The picture with him at the each one teach ione program is an example of synergy because he is doing something well, which connotes him as a good person which would make people watch ill manors

The Q plan b also is an example of synergy because it shows an interview with plan b which allows the audience to get to know him better.

Tag London
To summarise, I think these hashtags are a dig at David Cameron’s and the Politicians, furthermore I think it is a dig at the whole of the Uk’s super powers and powerful people. They are disagreeing with what David Cameron says. They want change and they want a different Britain run by different people. I also think they are condoning the riots earlier in the year saying they were good.

2) The campaign allowed people to get talking about the movie. It also shows that they care about the youth voice and will use a typical

there  are links between the ill manors campaign as they are endeavouring to get their messages across. They may be different messages but they are all attempting to send out messages to their viewers. This emanates from the broadcast in where Plan B may have interviews with verbalize shows to magazine articles which is homogeneous to the ill manors campaign as they all promoting the movie and giving you a way of interacting with things to do with ill manors.

I believe this type of a campaign may be more prosperous that traditional campaigns as it is utilizing Twitter and convivial networking to promote themselves. In today's modern society technology is a paramount asset to the way we live and e media is becoming more and more paramount. So by ill manors utilizing this campaign through twitter and utilizing hash tags they would be targeting a wide target audience due to the fact that e media may be more consequential than broadcast and print nowadays. Withal through Twitter they are able to target a much wider audience as well as the campaign itself being different and unique.

Ill Manors Twitter and facebook feed

In these ill manors feeds, it shows different things like retweets and competitions, they are all used as a way to entice the audience about buying the album and watching the movie, because if plan B shows everyone that he is a people person this means people would like him more. meaning that he will get more sales.

Print Interviews

1.       This platform is being used because it is a simple interview with a person that’s non-interactive so the audience does not need to give input; this is why it is in a magazine. Also when it is on a newspaper aswell as e-media, it gives it more views/readers.  The interview technique is different to that of the Jonathan Ross Show and the Soccer AM shows.
2.
These articles do way more than entertain, the also inform and educate as most broadsheet text do, the answers that he gives in the interviews at the Jonathan Ross show varies to the ones at the print interviews because the Jonathan Ross show is an entertaining show and nothing else. The answers here have a lot more substance and have better vocabulary

3.       As I said before, I think this platform does not allow people to participate as there is nothing along the lines of “tweet us @....” so therefore I don’t think it allows participation.

4.      The questions help relate the celebrity to the audience and allow the reader get more knowledge about the celebrity. Another code is realism; this is shown in the way Plan B talks with a bit of slang and grit.

5.      There is cohesion in the print, there is a beginning middle and end the story told by Plan B makes the reader relate to him as a human being and not a celebrity. This show a bit of connection between Plan and the audience.

The pyscograpics for Mens Health is, men whom are in the aspirers and mainstreamers Rubicam and Young's chart, also people from B to about C1 due to the non fiction route taken, instead of a gossip route taken such as a red top tabloid like the Sun or the Daily Star. The demographics for Men Health is 25-50 year olds who are heterosexual and men.

The pyscographics for the Q magazine are people who are in the refromers group as it is not a major magazine and in the E category due to its youth orientation. The demographics are white teens/youth for both boys and girls.

The pyscographics for the guardian is aspirers and succeeders, due to the vocabulary used in the guardian. People from the social class of A to C1 would read this. The demographics would be, business men, whom are at the age of 30 and above.

The physcographics for the shortlist are people who are in the refromers group as it is not a major magazine. The demographics would be youth at the age of 13-19 and people who are interested in fashion like homosexuals.

Some intelligent components demonstrating understanding.

Answers are too brief and lack detail. Add an extra paragraph to Q4 explaining the "why" part of the question.

Grade D+

The film appeals to a wide audience because driving is such a broad topic and it needs to be educated to everyone, everywhere what happens if you don't wear a seatbelt. Also, anyone can watch a film such as this due to the fact there is no gore. The role of the child also shows that anyone can have an effect on drivers to make them put a seatbelt. The message is plain and easy to understand as it has no jargon or language that can go over certain viewer's head. Furthermore there is no speech meaning it can appeal to people who speak different language. Due to how brief the film is, it is available to be seen on social networking sites and video blogs. The hypodermic needle theory is used as everyone can be “injected” with the education of knowing what wearing a seatbelt does for a driver.

Plan B on radio 1 conveyed another synergy of plan b and ill manors. This is because in all the other interviews, plan b is being sold as a brand, and on radio 1 the album and film iLL MANORS are being publicised.  The target audience is youth from about 16-28 meaning that Plan B realises that a big gap of sales can go to the people in that category. As plan b has appealed to other groups like the mainstreamers, via the Jonnathan Ross show and the succeeders and aspirers in the tedx talk seminar.

In the radio 1 interview he also gives the audience background information such as where he got the theme off the song "iLL MANORS" he got it from a German man called Peter Fox who is an artist.

Chat shows

The website for "iLL MANORS" contains

  • The Trailer
  • Synopsis of the movie
  • Ben Drew information
  • Still Images
  • Videos
  • Buy now Link
  • Links
  • Reactions to the Movie
  • iLL MANORS Album
I think these were put on the website as synergies to the movie, which can promote the movie and Ben Drew as a person. The trailer is on every movie website, because in order to give the movie a second thought, you need to be enticed by the trailer and that is also the case for the synopsis. The information of Ben Drew link, sells Ben as a rapper, singer, song writer, actor, director and lastly, a human being who has had it rough. this page may bring Ben Drew more fans. The videos are there to entertain the audience and show them funny things that has happened on set. The "buy now" link is there to generate income as it is a quick way for people to by a copy of iLL MANORS when it came out. The reactions to the movie are also good as it shows different peoples thoughts(which are generally positive) about the movie. Lastly, the album link is also good as a synergy of the movie and to plan B as a person.

The Jonnathan Ross show I think is for mainstreamers and aspireres as it is a show watched alot of people in the UK who are majority mainstreamers. Aspirers would watch this as they may want to become like these celebrities being interviewed. I think the people watching this would be in the category C1-E due to the different people appearing on the show causing a variety of viewers.

Jonathan Ross show is broadcasted on ITV and is also on at prime time on a Saturday night, this shows how big his programme is as he gets this main slot after moving from the bbc. Soccer AM is broadcast on Saturday mornings on sky sports 1.

The audience appeal would be different on each different show. In Jonathan Rossis more dry humorous way and it Soccer AM has the football jargon and is more spontaneous. On Jonathan Ross he talks about society and on Soccer AM he talks about his albums and music. He is similar in both texts as he tries to get messages across to the viewers and different in the way that he speaks about different stuff and about different things.

Dear Mr Drew,

My name is Aaron Alexander, and I was hoping you would be able to take the time out to come to my school Greenford High School to speak with us about what you do why you do it. In media studies, we have been watching iLL MANORS and making notes on  it, and i have seen a different side to the Plan B we see singing and rapping, we see more of  Ben Drew. Seeing you but blood sweat and tears into your movie made me realise that hard work beats talent when talent does work hard (not saying you do not have talent by the way). Also watching your interviews and seeing you speak at the TEDx venue showed me that you have the same view as me in regards to the media.

With this being said, with great humility, my school would be over the moon if you could come and pay us a visit and speak to us in further detail.

Thank you
Aaron Alexander

Institution
The Studio that produced Ill Manors went by the name of "Film London Microwave" also BBC Films and Aimimage had a part to play. These institutions have very low budget, but were able to make a good film.
How much Ill Manors cost to produce (its budget)?
The film "Ill Manors" cost only £100,000 to make but made a sale of 453,570 on box office.
How was Ill Manors funded?
Plan B went on tour for two years (2010 and 2011) to help fund Ill manors.
What is the target audience for Ill Manors?
The audience is for youth from about 15- 35 even though the age rating was an 18. It is about the life that a lot of youth find interesting so they would watch it also it is targeted at C1-E psychographs as that is low middle and working class people. The unique selling point is the gritty raw personality of London as an area. Also the jargon used by Plan B makes it appeal to youth.
Who is the main distributor of Ill Manors?
The main distributor of ill manors is revolver entertainment as the rights to the film were sold to them in April 2005.
How was Ill Manors promoted?
The film “ill manors” was promoted through revolver entertainment as they were given the rights to the film. However, along with this factor, another was the fact that ill manors was helped to become big through the music videos by plan b to help promote the story line as well as what the film was about.
Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?
The story line was the same as a big blockbuster movie because it had a protagonist and the protagonists survives whilst the other characters either die or go to prison. A difference between them is that the characters in the movie weren't well recognised actors but just normal people acting.
How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques.
The trailer for ill manors promotes the film and appeals to the age demographic aimed at by this film, the 15 - 25 year olds. This is done through the use of a music video as teenagers are more likely to watch music videos therefore getting a point across in a music video is an effective way of communicating to this demographic. The trailer clearly portrays the lives people who have been brought up in deprived areas such as council estates and the effect it has had on them whilst they were growing up. This hooks the audience into the narrative because, it gives the audience a realistic insight of how people from deprived areas are coping and the problems they are facing every day of their lives. Also, the voice over of Plan B almost raping instead of telling the story in just words in the trailer is effective on the audience. This is because it could highlight how he directed/produced the film and it also conveys to the audience that Ill Manors is a reflection of his life when he was growing up in a council estate.
How does the trailer for Ill Manors balance plot and spectacle?
The trailer for ill manors shows different characters as well as different scenes. This therefore represents the amount of different story lines in the film and the fact that they all link and cross in one way or another. Also the use of different spectacles in the trailer therefore hooks an audience.

Exam Questions for "Ill Manors"

Media Representations: How is gender/ethnicity/age represented in the video?
In the video, the only real gender represented by the video is males. This can mean that women are not seen because they are smarter than males by keeping it Low-Key. This leads me on to a point Berger referred to, a point saying "men act and women appear" from that quote I get that men are quite rashed when it comes to decisions and women think and take time. Males whom are youth and live on council estates are represented quite a bit in the video. The video represents the boys as scums and scary, hence the reference to the "Hug a Hoodie" campaign setup by David Cameron. The video of the boys violently positioned, getting ready to loot, shows the youth as animals. Cohen's theory folk devils, are portrayed in the video as they look like gangsters and menaces to society. However the lyrics portray a different meaning that shows, the higher powered people at fault for the behaviour of the youth when they are outcast from birth because of what their parents had or did not have.

In the video, from the untrained eye, it looks like a normal gangster video from the likes of Cheef Keef and other rappers. The way the music video is set, it looks like a dominant video made due to the type of people in it and where it is set, in a dark place which connotes "the hood"this music video would be dominant to viewers that listen to gangster rap, but alternative to most viewers that listen to pop music. The editing is very fast pacing making it look like a normal hip hop video. It is also a montage of editing. The purpose of the music video was to inform, whilst the audience were youth and people who cared to listen to another representation of the riots. The video looks like it is promoting and condoning the riots, but the lyrics beg to differ. As they are talking about figure in the UK who could have done more.

Music video research

The film Ill Manors was written as a "hip hop musical for the twenty-first century” merging elements of both crime drama in a music video. Plan B had always intended to narrate the film with a different song for each the six stories however some songs were written later, such as "Ill Manors." As a result of his success of "The Defamation of Strickland Banks," Plan B went on tour for two years  after the production of the film and the recording of the album was not completed until 2012.
"Ill Manors" was released as the album's lead single on 25 March 2012. The music video was made available on 4 March 2012. The single was officially made available on 25 March 2012 Ill Manors hit the charts at number 6.  The track was also made available as a free download on pre-order of the deluxe edition of the album.  "Deepest Shame" was released as the third single from the album, on 9 September 2012. The video for the track premiered on 6 August 2012. The video features Anouska Mond, who plays Michelle in ill Manors. The track has thus far peaked on the UK Singles Chart at No. 17, following the release of an EP of remixes. "Playing with Fire" was released as the fourth single from the album, on 3 December 2012. The track features vocals from producer and vocalist Labrinth. An animated video for the track premiered in July 2012, prior to the release of the album. The official video will reportedly premiere towards the end of September. The track's release as a single was confirmed by Labrinth at T4 on the Beach.

Plan B TEDx

1.      Plan B’s beliefs are beliefs of disappointment of the main people in England like the government and influential people in England. He thinks that those people haven’t put any effort in trying to transform the youths of today and haven’t given them any outlets of their bad lives they are living in. He believes that we can all give back to the youth of today, whether it is a skill set or just another outlook on life. His values are doing well for yourselves but also help other people that are less fortunate than yourself.  He also believes that the using the word “CHAV” is as bad as using racist abuse as it is a derogatory term used for working classed white youth, which is unfair as they were born into that lifestyle.
The target audience for the TEDx lecture is white middle classed people in business that are able to give the youth a chance. This would be C2 and B category because C2 are blue collared workers who can give chances like pluming to the youth of England, also C1 type people have qualifications which brings in opportunity and opportunity to give to youth. I think the psychographic groups he is relating to are succeeders, mainstreamers and reformers. This is because succeeders would give something for them to aspire to; the mainstreamers are “normal people” which the youths may aspire to be like. Reformers would relish this opportunity to do something different.

3.      Plan B says the media twist the words of people and just care about the story that will get them money and not the truth. This is shown when he tells the audience the situation that happened when he nearly got turfed from a place he was filming.
This can be linked back to Cohen’s media theory of moral panic because the media through their negativity have made the public scared and nervous and they see the youth as a threat

Trailer Ill manors

Trailers are used to persuade people to watch a film. It gives the audience a look into the characters playing what roles and it also gives a bit if action to keep us wanting more. It also shows the credits of the people who have had a part to play in the film. Lastly it shows the day its out in the cinema.
Normally trailers are distributed by the studio that made the film. Like “Revolver” distributed “Ill Manors.” It can been shown on websites like “youtube.com” or been shown on adverts. Normally the long versions are on the websites.

Ill manors use conventions such as voice overs via rapping during the film, it also gives a plot summary of the film, the drugs money and power are all shown in the trailer which again makes the audience intrigued by the movie and makes them want to watch it.

The actors in it are not really people we know like Idris Alba or Asher D due to the low budget of the film.  The narrator’s voice is over-used to make us realise it is his film and he made it. The director is Ben Drew or known to us as Plan B and once the trailers shows that it brings an increase demand for the people wanting to watch the film.

The genre of the film is a British urban drama based in London, so I thought it could maybe be about something like Adulthood, Top Boy, and Bullet Boy etc. I was expecting fighting, war, drugs and money. I think I was right because Ill Manors was just like the other films made by Noel Clarke. The mood was an eerie mood because it always seemed dark. The slow rapping kind of like poetry made the tension increase throughout the movie.  The characters show that known proper actors can’t play the role of street boys when they are not from the street.

ILL Manors- the making

1. Plan B's intentions of making the film was to showcase how London is to youth growing up on the streets, to other people such as middle class people.

2. The production was a very long process due to the lack of funds available to Ben Drew and the cast. it started out as a music video and then went to a short film, it got enough recognition for Drew to make it into a movie that was 2 hours long.

3. Possible target audience varies, some may say the target audience is youth and teens that are quite violent and criminals, but another representation is that middle class people need to see the real side of youth in London and not a cartoonised version of it which is often shown.

4. The film is successful in showing what it is wanted, such as the place London is and how drugs, money and power does to people in London. The film is authentic, personal and imaginative. Also, as a low budget film, it made it more real as they did not have enough money to pay for actors which meant they used real people, that are growing up in modern day London.

E4 is a TV channel branched off channel 4 in 2001. The “E” stands for entertainment meaning the focus age group is 15-35 (youth). It broadcast shows like The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother. It shows a lot of comedies, sit coms, reality TV and drama aimed at youth. They show both US and UK programmes like Made in Chelsea and Misfits. In September 2012 E4 attracted more people in its history. It is watched by 9 million people a month more than BBC3 and Sky 1.
BBC 3 is another TV channel made by the BBC. Again, it is for 15-35 year olds. BBC normally broadcast UK TV, such as Russell Howards Good News and Eastenders repat. The type of genre of BBC3 varies as there is sport, drama, urban drama, comedy and more. This means it attracted most youth in the spectrum for one way or another. BBC thought that they needed another Channel to be a bit more “urban” and that’s where BBC3 came in. It was broadcasted in February 2003.

My target audience is 15- 30 year olds but I expect a majority viewing from 15-21 year olds. It would be broadcasted on a Thursday due to Champions League being on Tuesday and Wednesday. The groups I have targeted are C1, C2, and E. the physcographic group I am going to target are the strugglers, reformers and explorers. This is because the show is new and urban. It is pre-watershed, even though it has moderate violence and drug references and no use. I hope I can get a lot of the top boy and youngers viewers as they are quite alike although this show will be quite sophisticated.

During our focus group, we spoke about our narrative idea, which was a “sophisticated top boy” aimed at 15-21 year old boys and a few girls. The topics would be about money, violence and the opposite sex.
We based our programme on the streets of London town, and the things that happen in youth society in London. The drugs, the clothes, the girls, the fights, the love and the hate.  Although we do not have the names of the characters, we have the personalities they portray. One of them is a street smart sophisticated guy who is not into violence but is about his money the other one is a funny character to show a bit of light heartedness in the pre- watershed show.  Humera asked “how is the smart character “smart”?” This made me realise that out characters need to have an identity that allows the audience to understand who he is and what he stands for.

The location would be set in Ladbroke Grove area just to show a darker representation of London.

ill manors review

Ill Manors Review
“Ill Manors” was directed by Ben Drew or Plan B to most of us. He is a rapper singer known by the track “She Said” he also played a part in Adulthood, Harry Brown, 4.3.2.1 and The Sweeny. Although he directed Ill Manors, he also played the role of the cab driver, which took the main character away from the hood which was a smart move on his part. Also Plan B was also rapping throughout the story line which made it seem like his own movie. For a low budget film the directing was top notch, which made us now look at Ben Drew as a serious director.
Riz Ahmed plays Aaron, a teen who has grown up in a care home, throughout the film it looked like he didn’t have his own mind until he found the baby on the train aborted by Kata, played by Natile Press, an eastern European who is forced to be a sex object and tries to run away from that life. Ed Skrein plays Ed another youth that comes out of a care home. He doesn’t use his brain a lot and is very rushed into making decisions. To be fair, they are all pretty decent actors, but not at the quality of Asher D and Kano and far Idris Alba.
The characters were in abundance and did their job, because Marcel’s gang looked like a proper gang that a lot of people on the road would think it was a real gang. Also the extras like the ones at the pub made the movie look more realistic and something that could happen in real life.
The plot is about 4 drug dealers who all get involved in their respective problems, but different dealers deal with it differently. There are also fiend’s who need their quick fix of crack and will go to any lengths to get it, whether it is killing, stealing or selling their bodies to men. Also, joining gangs to look good, until it all goes up in flames, literally. The plot is mainly what money drugs and power can do to people in a nut shell. The streets of London are also a major part in this film as it is based in London, Ghetto London.
The sound track was mostly Plan B rapping about the story and lives of the characters, this worked well due to crazy lives of every single one of the main characters, also there were no mainstream songs on the movie to show it is not a movie for the light hearted. The music was non diegetic for most of the movie if not all of it, but the music was parallel as it was dark music just like the movie. The music was also quite a bit of “gangsta” music due to the contents of the movie and the things the characters were embarking on. I was expecting this type of music because most of the British urban dramas have that type of sound track. Like Adulthood, Ill Manors have a sound track available to download and listen to.
The audience is for youth from about 15- 35 even though the age rating was an 18. It is about the life that a lot of youth find interesting so they would watch it also it is targeted at C1-E psychographs as that is low middle and working class people.

I would recommend it for people who understand how it is to be in the predicament of some of the people there or people who are interested about that life.  It could also be used as a deterrent for people who want to be in that life because they think it is cool.
